چکیده

PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of topical timolol on the optic nerve head (ONH) circulation in the cynomolgus monkey. METHODS Eight cynomolgus monkeys were used. Timolol (0.5%, 30 microL) was instilled twice daily into 1 eye and physiological saline into the other eye for 7 consecutive days. The ONH tissue blood velocity (NB(ONH)) was determined using the laser speckle method. The determinations of NB(ONH) were carried out before the first instillation and 4 hours after the first, the seventh and the last instillation. The IOP was measured periodically. All measurements were performed in a masked manner. RESULTS Twice daily 7-day instillation of 0.5% timolol showed no significant effect on the NB(ONH) in either eye, while the IOP was significantly decreased in both eyes. CONCLUSION In the cynomolgus monkey, the ONH circulation was not affected by 7-day twice daily topical timolol treatment.

Effect of topical latanoprost-timolol combined therapy on retinal blood flow and circulation of optic nerve head tissue in cynomolgus monkeys.

PURPOSE To evaluate the effects of topical latanoprost and timolol in combined therapy on retinal blood flow and tissue circulation in the optic nerve head (ONH) of the cynomolgus monkey. METHODS Latanoprost (30 microL, 0.005%) was instilled once daily and timolol (30 microL, 0.5%) twice daily for 6 days into 1 eye, and physiological saline into the other eye to serve as control. Blood veloci...

Effect of topical timolol on tissue circulation in optic nerve head.

The effects of topical 0.5% timolol on tissue circulation in the albino rabbit optic nerve head (ONH) were investigated using a laser speckle tissue circulation analyzer. In the first experiment, the normalized blur (NB) value, a quantitative index of tissue blood flow velocity in the ONH, intraocular pressure (IOP), blood pressure, and pulse rate were measured under general anesthesia before, ...

Effect of dorzolamide and timolol on ocular blood flow in patients with primary open angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

BACKGROUND There is evidence that perfusion abnormalities of the optic nerve head are involved in the pathogenesis of glaucoma. There is therefore considerable interest in the effects of topical antiglaucoma drugs on ocular blood flow. A study was undertaken to compare the ocular haemodynamic effects of dorzolamide and timolol in patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) or ocular hypert...

Optic Nerve Head Blood Flow Changes Induced by Ripasudil Added to Prostaglandin Analogues in Primary Open Angle Glaucoma

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of topical ripasudil, a Rho-associated-kinase inhibitor, added to prostaglandin analogue eye drops on optic nerve head (ONH) blood flow in patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). Subjects and Methods: Subjects comprised 12 eyes from 12 patients with POAG who had been using a topical prostaglandin analogue for more than 3 months. ONH blood flow, intraocu...

Update and critical appraisal of combined timolol and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors and the effect on ocular blood flow in glaucoma patients

Topical hypotensive therapy with both timolol and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors has been shown to be efficacious at reducing intraocular pressure. Many prospective studies have also suggested that carbonic anhydrase inhibitors augment ocular blood flow and vascular regulation independent of their hypotensive effects. Although consistent in their findings, these studies must be cautiously interp...
